Wharfedale
F.A. Minor Team for their game against Bradford F.A. on Sunday
14th. March 2010

Back Row L to R:
Stuart Darfield (Ass. Manager), Sam Westerman, Zach Utley, Jack
Kelly, Daniel Knight, Clarke Lydon,
Adam Whitfield (Capt), Sam Turpin, Henry Myers and Colin Grunwell
(Joint Team Manager).
Front Row L to
R: Robbie Oldham, Oliver Nightingale, Thomas Scott, Alistair
Walshaw, George Lawrence & Matthew Staniland.
Absent: Rob Ames (Joint Team Manager).
A magnificent performance in goal by Daniel Knight and a
brilliant
Henry Myers goal nearly
puts the Wharfedale F.A. Under 17's in the
Semi Finals.
A goal in the first minute of injury time
should put Bradford F.A. through
to the Semi Finals.
Bradford
F.A. 1 Wharfedale F.A. 1
The Wharfedale F.A. Under 17 Representative side were unlucky not
to progress to the Semi Final stage of this
West Riding County F.A. Minor Cup Competition
game played at Campion A.F.C. Manningham Mills.
In the first minute of the three minutes of
stoppage time a pass through the middle by a Bradford player
was
deflected by the Referee into the path of
another home player, who spectators in line thought was in an
off-side
position, for him to go on and drive it into
the net for, you must say, a deserved equaliser on the balance of
play.
Following the very heavy defeat in their last
game 2 weeks previously when Wharfedale were without their 2
central defenders Adam Whitfield and Zach Utley
and went onto lose by 9 goals to 1 against a Harrogate side
which included 15 players in the squad of 16,
from Harrogate Railway Athletic.
For this game Wharfedale were without 4 players
for differing reasons, 2 of which gave backword at the last
minute. Players making their first appearance
were Oliver Nightingale who took over from his twin Brother James
who was
in Hospital, Sam Turpin and Jack Kelly. Adam Whitfield, Zach Utley
and Matthew Staniland returned
to the squad with Daniel Knight taking over in
goal from Clarke Lydon and this had nothing to do with the result
of the previous game.
Bradford got off to a great start when after 2
minutes, a shot out of the blue from 25 yards crashed against the
crossbar
and came back into play. Wharfedale were unlucky themselves in the
7th. minute following a corner
from the right when Robbie Oldham had his
goal-bound header cleared off the line under the crossbar with
the
'keeper beaten.
The game went on in this vein, end to end with
Bradford playing the better football but gradually the
visitors
were gaining in confidence and the game was a
great spectacle for the spectators.
The game was still scoreless at half time but
in the second half Bradford were pressing hard and this is when
the
Wharfedale goalkeeper Daniel Knight kept his
team in the game with some breathtaking saves, his positioning for
his age was uncanny, coming off his line many
times to save and block shots and one catch from a corner from
the Bradford right when he moved backwards
towards his far post when under intense pressure was superb.
Near the end it looked as if he was beaten by a
wonderful shot which seemed to be heading for the right hand
corner of the net but Knight dived full length
to turn the shot round the post for an miraculous save.
In fact the long time Bradford Official Mike
McGowan came to the Wharfedale dug out and complimented the
Wharfedale Manager Colin Grunwell on his
'keepers performance.
Then in the 67th. minute, again out of the
blue, Wharfedale took the lead with an magnificent goal of
outstanding
quality, Wharfedale made a left wing attack and
the ball was crossed into the middle where a defender headed it
out of his penalty area, it landed at the feet
of HENRY MYERS
25 yards out and he controlled the ball, moved
it to his side a yard and as the defence
advanced hit an unbelievable shot which went screaming into the
net for
a real "goal of the season" finish,
absolutely brilliant!
Wharfedale had something to try and hold onto
now and all 11 players gave 100% effort in a courageous battle,
as legs tired Oliver Nightingale, who in his
first game had played splendidly, came off to be replaced by
Matthew
Staniland who took to the mantle and worked his
socks off up and down the right. Later Jack Kelly making his
first appearance took over from another first
timer Sam Turpin who had battled away up front with Tom Scott.
It looked as if Wharfedale were to hold on for
a memorable victory as the game moved into the 3 minutes
stoppage time but Bradford, with it raining
heavily now, had also played really well and deserved to take a
share
of the game with their equaliser in the 91st
minute (90+1) but it was real bad luck for the visitors when a
pass
deflected off the Referee into the path of a
Bradford forward, who appeared to be in an off-side position
and
he took it in his stride to beat the
"unbeatable" Daniel Knight. A deserved share of the
points.
For
Wharfedale the whole team and Substitutes were magnificent, they
gave their all and worked tremendously
hard for themselves and each other. Daniel
Knight was the Man of the Match but for Wharfedale the back four
of Sam Westerman, Captain Adam Whitfield, Zach
Utley (brilliant) and Alistair Walshaw played out of their
skins, Oliver Nightingale, Robbie Oldham, Henry
Myers and George Lawrence in mid-field covered every blade
of grass as did the two Substitutes Matthew
Staniland and Jack Kelly when they entered the fray.
Up front the two warriors the diminutive Tom
Scott and first timer Sam Turpin kept the Bradford defence
on
their toes, not giving them a moments rest. A
real Managers dream for a team who worked harder than many
other Wharfedale teams in the past and
certainly excelled after their disappointing display against
Harrogate
Railway, SORRY Harrogate F.A. in the last game.
Joint Team Manager Colin Grunwell is a very
hard task master and appears to go over the top at times but
that
is because of his commitment and trying to get
the best out of his charges, he certainly did that this
weekend
and after the game praised his troops very
highly indeed I'm sure that they were proud of his words! In the
last
two games he has been helped by Rawdon Old Boys
Secretary Stuart Darfield in the dressing room and on the
touch-line and he has done well and we give him
the District F.A's thanks. Joint Team Manager Rob Ames who
has missed the last 2 games because of family commitments
would have been proud of his team as were all the
Wharfedale Council Members and supporters
present! WELL DONE TO EVERYONE, A GREAT DAY!
A win
would have taken Wharfedale into the Semi Finals at the County F.A.
H.Q. at Fleet Lane, Woodlesford.
They are still in second place but with all
games played, Bradford have to win their last game against
Keighley F.A. to win it on goal
difference. Keighley F.A. have lost their 2 previous games.
This was a great game to watch and the players
of both sides must be complimented on their conduct over the
full 90 minutes. There wasn't a bad foul in the
game and the sportsmanship over the whole game was exemplary.
The spectators too must also be complimented on
their conduct, naturally they wanted their team and their Sons
to win but there was no derisive shouting and
it was as all Junior games should be and very many aren't!
After the game Bradford F.A. and Campion A.F.C.
put on an excellent buffet for the players and officials of
both Associations ( the 3 match officials
decided not to participate) and were complimented by
the Wharfedale F.A. Chairman Mr.David Martin
for their hospitality and friendliness. This followed a welcome
by Bradford F.A. President Mr.Albert
Dent.
If Bradford do get to the Semi Finals we wish
them well!

WHARFEDALE
F.A. 3 CRAVEN F.A. 1
Leaving their best performance of the season to the last game and
without their leading, in fact, only goalscorer this
season, Duncan
Beckwith who is out for weeks with an ankle injury, Wharfedale
played brilliantly to gain a deserved
win against Craven F.A. who top
the group and go into the Semi Final of the West Riding County F.A.
Minor Cup this
Saturday 21st. March 2009 against Leeds
F.A. at the County ground Woodlesford, 2.00pm. kick off.
Wharfedale F.A. brought 2 under 16 players into the side for the
first time in this Under 17 Competition and they did
not let anyone down, a mid-fielder Henry Myers and goalkeeper
Clark Lydon both of Guiseley A.F.C. U16,s.
The whole side especially in the
second half took the game to Craven after the sides had turned
round at 0 - 0.
Wharfedale had missed 2 good chances in the opening minutes of the
half but in the 54th. minute the sheer
persistence of the diminutive JOE
ANSLOW of Pool A.F.C.
gave Wharfedale the lead, when his first 2 efforts were
blocked by the keeper and a defender before he pounced on the
loose ball again to strike it into the net.
This goal lifted his team mates to even greater efforts and they
continued to hold there own especially in defence
where giant centre backs Connor Brown (Capt) of Otley Town and
Adam Whitfield of Rawdon Old Boys were in
tremendous form and coped with everything that came their way.
Full back Chris Wiley played by far his best game of
the season, he tackled hard, supported his midfield and his energy
was superb for the full 90 minutes.
Wharfedale got a shock though when Craven equalised after 65
minutes following a short corner on the left which
was not dealt with and the cross into the middle was squeezed into
the net from close range at the near post.
This was a set back and would Wharfedale fold against the top side
in the group, no, within a minute they again went
in front when the alert DANNY
SMITH of Guiseley A.F.C.
seeing the 'keeper off his line hit a shot from all of 28
yards
over the 'keepers head and dispairing arms, into
the net much to the
delight of his team mates and supporters.
The game still had 24 minutes to go but although Craven battled
hard they caused Clark Lydon, who had come on as a
second half substitute in goal for Jack Realy, who had made a
couple of first class saves at the feet of Craven forwards
in the first half, he dealt competently with everything that came
his way.
Wharfedale though put everything into the game and they played
with confidence the longer the game went on and their
third goal came in the 87th. minute to give them breathing space
in the final minutes of the game.
NATHAN
SMITH of Pool A.F.C.
who had caused the Craven defence plenty of headaches with his
enterprising play got
a goal his play this season deserved when he finished off some
fine play to net the clinching goal.
Jack Ryan in midfield is another player who has come into his own
the longer the competition progressed, he was a
work-horse and must be praised for his contribution after a slow
start to the campaigne. "Jack the lad"!!
It had been a great performance by all the players used which
included the 3 substitute players who all helped towards
this win. George Huntley up front has run his legs off this season as
well as taking some fine corners which did not get
the end product they deserved. Henry Myers was a revelation in his first
game and he is still young enough to play in the
side again next season, as is goalkeeper Clark Lydon and centre back
Adam Whitfield. For all the other players, this
game was a good one to finish with, they all played a great part in
this win and the season as a whole.
Very well done to them all.
Not forgetting the injured missing striker Duncan Beckwith who has
been a star this season with his 5 goals, super
Duncan!!
Well done to them all!
One of the Team Managers Rob Ames was away for this game and over
the past 2 years when he has been missing and
the other Joint Team Manager Colin Grunwell has taken over, he has managed to
win all the 3 games. He may not have
expected to win against Craven but it just goes to show that if players give their
all and work hard results can be gained.
Colin was proud after this performance, he may not show it but he
was bristling underneath!
Also well done to Barnoldswick Town, they have erected floodlights
this past couple of months and they
looked superb
as did the
pitch, a credit to them for all their hard work.
To all the teams lads who read this report, you were all great
tonight, thanks for the memories.

The
Semi Final was played at Woodlesford on Saturday 21st. March 2009
and resulted in a win for Leeds F.A.
who
defeated Craven F.A. by 2 goals to 1 and go through to the Final
to meet either Bradford F.A. or
Huddersfield
F.A. who play at Woodlesford next Saturday 28th March 2009 in the
2nd. Semi Final. K.O. 2.00pm.
Leeds F.A. were 2 goals to Nil in the lead at half time and Craven
fought back with a goal in the second period
from Matthew Blackwell, the same player should have taken the game
to extra time if he had taken a chance
with
only the Leeds goalkeeper to beat 2 minutes from the end, the
'keeper smothering his shot.

Riding County F.A. Minor Cup Competition 2006-2007
Halifax F.A. 4 Wharfedale F.A. 5
The Wharfedale F.A. Under 17's representative side won their last
game of the season in an
amazing game at Natty Lane, Illingworth, Halifax on Sunday 11th.
March 2007.
Playing against the wind in the first half on one of the worst
pitches imaginable (no fault of
Halifax F.A or Halifax Irish
and Ovenden West Riding who play on the ground) Halifax took
the lead in the 9th.
minute against the
run of play when Scott Firth played a ball back to his
'keeper who took a swing at
the ball on the edge of his
penalty area and missed completely
for the centre forward to run
around him and put the ball
into the empty net.
The luckless Scott Firth has had a really unlucky season with
injuries and he injured his ankle
again and had to be replaced by Adam Waite in the 15th. minute.
Wharfedale hit back in the 17th. minute when Eder Ruiz on the
right did brilliantly to find
LIAM ROBINSON
inside the penalty area and the prolific striker did the rest.
Wharfedale then went into the lead in the 44th. min.with a superb
goal again by ROBINSON,
he was again found by a lovely through ball by his striking
partner Ruiz and outpaced the
defender to hit a powerful shot past the outstanding Halifax
'keeper into the corner of the net.
In the 55th. minute Tom Sinnott came on for Tom McKenna, who had
played an outstanding
game to that point but Wharfedale had a shock in the 63rd.
minute when
Halifax scored twice
in the space of 2 minutes. Both goals came from slack defending
when first from a right wing
corner, the ball was headed in at the back post and then from a
free kick the ball was again
played high into the Wharfedale penalty area to the back post, the
ball was headed back into
the middle for the loose ball to be hit into the net.
Wharfedale were on the back foot now with the wind at their backs
and Louis Christoforou
who had also played very well was replaced by Jimmy Garner-Currie
in the 70th. minute.
Wharfedale finally got back into the game with an equaliser in the
78th. minute through mid
-fielder MATTHEW
CAVANAGH following
a corner when he forced the loose ball over
the line.
Again slack marking and indecision gave Halifax the lead within
a minute of the
visitors
equaliser.
Wharfedale threw everything forward and with the pitch not doing
any favours at all for either
team and with 5 minutes left to play there efforts were rewarded
when in the 85th. minute a
perfect corner from the Wharfedale right by Cavanagh saw ROBINSON
head into the net
after the Halifax 'keeper made his only mistake of the game after
playing superbly. It was
Robinson's hat-trick.
Better things were to come when in the 89th. minute another great
corner from Cavanagh
was hit into the middle for ROBINSON
to hit his 4th. and match
winning goal for
Wharfedale to snatch a hard earned victory.
Liam Robinson playing his last game for Wharfedale has been a
tremendous scorer of goals
in his one and a half seasons with the side. He will be sorely
missed as he will be too old next
season. Other players playing their last games are Captain Tom
Kilmurray who has been a
rock and very accomplished
player in defence, his partners in the centre of defence have
also
done really well in Tom
McKenna and Tom Sinnott. Scott Firth has also been a mainstay
in
the left full back position
even though he has been hit by an irritating ankle injury.
Some of the players have got better as the season has progressed,
Matthew Cavanagh had
his best game today, Paul Whiteley and James Davy have been
mainstays.
It's a shame that because of age they will no longer be available.
One of the Wharfedale stars
in this game was Adam Waite who had a
real blinder when he took over at left full back when
Scott Firth had to leave the field injured.
His performance was way ahead of anything he has shown previously,
his tackling, passing and
his runs down the line supporting his team mates on the attack was
a real revelation.
There are some good lads who will still be able to play next
season and they will learn from the
experiences they have gained this season, Eder Ruiz who made the
first 2 goals today,
Maxwell Milner who first played last season when 2 years under
age, Jimmy Garner-Currie and
Louis Christoforou who also did very well
today.
Thanks to Colin Grunwell the Manager for his efforts today and
also for the help of Steve Milner.
Could we also thank all the parents of the players for the support
they have given us over the
season and for their help in getting the players to home and away
matches alike. I can assure you
that your help is very much appreciated.
On behalf of the Wharfedale & District F.A. and the Team
Managers could I thank all the
players for the efforts they have put in this season, we have
finished in 3rd. place in the group
just one point off the play off Semi Finals at the West Riding
County F.A.
A very well done to all you lads, we hope that you have enjoyed
the experience, you were an
excellent squad and a credit to your parents and families.
Very best wishes in your football future and your life in general.
Reg. Allwood
Secretary.
