Burley Trojans U16's upset the apple cart by
defeating strong favourites Guiseley A.F.C. U16's Yellows by
the games only goal after 31 mins to take the Wharfedale F.A. Junior
Cup for the first time.
In a pulsating game both teams went out to attack and chances were
missed along the way but no one could
doubt the resolve of the whole Burley side to hold onto their one
goal lead scored after 31 minutes from a
brilliant header from the diminutive LUKE
BOTT, the
left wing cross was perfection.
Guiseley could point to missed chances especially near the end when
a close in chance was blazed over the crossbar
with only the 'keeper to beat. On the other hand just previous to
this Burley had a chance to extend their
lead but with
again only the 'keeper to beat the chance was hit wildly high and
wide. This is how the game went from start
to finish
and had a superb crowd of 260 on tenterhooks for the full 80
minutes.
In this kind of game there had to be a star that shone even above
some great performances put in by many other players
and that was Burley Trojans captain and goalkeeper Daniel
"Danny" Knight who was the hero of his sides win with
a
commanding performance from one so young playing in a very important
position. His safe handling of the ball and more
so his uncanny
positioning made him stand high on a night of passion. The game was
played throughout in a
tremendous spirit by all the players and ably controlled by Referee
Lee Creasey, Assistants Tony McGowan and Roy
Hammond and fourth official Neil Barlow. Guiseley had giant centre
half Adam Whitfield taken off with a hip injury but
every player gave his all in an end to end encounter which was great
credit to their managers and staff in the fitness
stakes. Wharfedale F.A. youth player Henry Myers tried his best to
find holes in the Burley defence but for all his
prowess Burley put their bodies on the line and would not lie down.
As happened 2 years ago when Burley were in the
Final, Burley in Wharfedale must have
been a deserted village by the number supporters they brought and
when the
young Trojans took the lead it nearly lifted
the roof off the half burnt out grandstand. All the supporters
including
Guiseley's, did their teams proud by their support of
this Final. Three cheers to all the families who attended.
Old Horsforth St. Margaret's goalkeeper and Club Secretary in the
late 1960's, 70's and early 80's, George Swart who
sadly passed away a couple of months or so ago would have loved this
game. Following his funeral his wife Pauline
and family asked that the proceeds of a collection should go to the
Wharfedale F.A. and it was decided that like the
Challenge and Sunday Cup Finals there should be a "Man of the
Match" award in the Junior Final.
George's eldest Son John attended the game and selected and
presented the Man of the Match award which will be
given annually.
John said that he had no hesitation in giving the award to Burley
Trojans captain and goalkeeper Danny Knight for his
scintillating performance, this award was roundly applauded by all
at the presentation and was richly deserved.
It was fitting as well that the first time the award was made it was
won by a goalkeeper, which as previously stated is
the position George Swart played.
The Guiseley side must be congratulated for after being given their
memento's they lined up and applauded the Burley
team when they came up to receive their memento's and Junior Cup
from the Chairman of the Wharfedale F.A.
Mr.David Martin, who presented the trophies in the absence of the
Sponsor of the Competition Mr. Phil Thompson the
Managing Director of Resource Print Solutions who was held up on
business.
A brilliant nights football enjoyed by all, this is what it is all
about, sportsmanship, humble in success and gracious
in
defeat. What a pleasure it was not only to see parents of the
players supporting the game but so many young people
there including many young ladies. Well done to all!
