Scott Firth
Scott Firth was the hero of Otley Town on
Saturday as the 20 years old put paid to the hopes of
Guiseley A.F.C. in reaching the
Final of the Wharfedale & District F.A. Challenge Cup with a
brace
of first half goals in his sides 3 goals to 1 win.
The youngster, who had represented the District F.A. in the
County F.A. Minor Cup 3 years ago,
played a full part in his sides
superb win against Guiseley A.F.C.
who are top of the Lancashire League
and could not cope with a side who put their full commitment into
the 90 minutes watched by a large
crowd on a lovely afternoon at the Old Showfield, Pool Road.
The other Otley goal was scored by Chris Dowson with Will Boye
replying for Guiseley.
The Otley defence really put their bodies on the line when
Guiseley did come at them in the second half,
countless times defenders,
threw themselves at the ball to stop shots at goal and they
disputed every
ball for possession
over the whole 90
minutes. Every player gave his all and they can be proud of the
victory and the way they played.
They now have to put this
type of performance into their league fixtures and move up
the
West Yorkshire League Premier Division table.
Guiseley on the day were caught
out by a team who wanted to win, disputed every ball and took
their
chances in a very sporting game excellently refereed by Michael
Dennison very ably helped by his
Assistants, Tony Brown and Paul Farrell.
This was local football at its best and enjoyed by all who
watched.
There was another shock although possibly lesser than the above
when Ventus Yeadon Celtic from
Division One of the West
Riding County Amateur League defeated Pool A.F.C. of the West
Yorkshire
League Premier Division also by 3 goals to 1.
After the nights frost the ground had softened and was fit to
play.
Pool were unfortunate in the first 20 minutes when they couldn't
find the net, defenders clearing shots
off the goal-line.
In the end Ventus ran out deserved winners with goals from
Michael Brame, Anthony Hannan and
Terry Hargreaves with the
Pool reply coming from veteran Paul Newsome.

May Day Monday morning, the 5th. May 2008.
A bumper May Day Monday morning crowd at Nethermoor,
the ground of Guiseley A.F.C.
saw an ANDY
CARLTON goal in
the 3rd. minute of injury time win this closely fought game
in the Wharfedale F.A. Resource Print Solutions Challenge Cup.
The biggest crowd for very many years thought the game was going
into extra time before
Carlton was given the chance at the edge of the
penalty area, to control the ball, turn away from
defenders and put the ball past the goalkeeper with
superb control.
The Guiseley Club and ground staff deserve much
credit for getting the ground fit for play for
both the Sunday Final last Friday night and
Challenge Cup Final following all the rain.
Otley Town have now done a great double, winning the Wharfedale
F.A. Challenge Cup and
the West Yorkshire League Division One title this season. They
will look forward to playing
in the Premier Division next Season.
All the spectators who attended the Finals have to be
congratulated, their support was very
much appreciated.

Played on the ground
of Guiseley AFC. on
Thursday 19th. April 2007.
Horsforth St. Margaret's defeated Guiseley A.F.C. in the Final
of the Wharfedale & District F.A.
Challenge Cup played at Guiseley A.F.C.
Guiseley did most of the attacking in the first 20
minutes but the Horsforth defence stood firm.
It was Horsforth who took the lead in the 39th. minute
with a goal by MATTHEW LEES.
The lead was short
lived however when Guiseley got the equaliser their first half
play deserved
through TOM MARSDEN
in the 43rd. minute.
In the second half Horsforth went in front in the 64th.
minute through KEVIN BARKER.
This was the signal for Guiseley to put on the pressure
and the more they attacked the more
stubborn the St. Margaret's defence became. With Guiseley
searching for equality that would
take the game into extra time Horsforth increased their
lead in the 89th. minute with a magnificent
goal by PHIL MORTON,
who chipped the ball over the advancing Matthew Platt in the
Guiseley
goal with considerable aplomb, it was a gem of a finish.
Guiseley made and missed many good chances during the
game but the Horsforth St. Margaret's
defence played brilliantly as a unit and in the end their
win could not be denied.
Mr.Reid Haddow a Life Member of the Wharfedale F.A. gave the
Andrew Peech Memorial Award
for the Man of the Match to
Paul Scott of Horsforth St.
Margaret's.
The Trophy and Mementos were presented to the Players and Match
Officials by the Managing Director
of the Sponsors Mr.Philip Thompson of Resource Print
Solutions of Bramley, Leeds.
The Wharfedale F.A. would like to take this opportunity to thank
the Sponsors, the Guiseley A.F.C.
Directors and Mr.Phil Rogerson in particular for the loan
of their ground and facilities for our three Cup
Finals, the Challenge, Sunday and Junior Cup Competitions
and also for the Wharfedale F.A. Minor team
home games in the West Riding County F.A. Minor Cup
Competition.
It would be remiss not to mention the very hard work of
the Guiseley A.F.C. ground staff and also
Mrs.Rachel O'Connor and her kitchen staff and Sue Clapham
and the Bar Staff for all the hardwork they
do for these games. Very many thanks!
